The year 1950 was chosen to divide radiocarbon time because global atmospheric carbon levels were, by then, drastically altered by human activities. ![]() That momentous date would, in time, become a significant placeholder on the Western time scale: day-zero Before Present (BP). ![]() ![]() The newly devised radiocarbon dating method was published in the last week of 1949 just before calendar pages turned to January 1, 1950.
